How to Choose the Right Curtain Material
Choosing curtains is about more than colour and fabric. One of the most common questions we receive is which fabric is best depending on how much natural light you want to let in, how much privacy you need, and whether the room needs to be completely darkened.
This guide takes you through our fabrics, from our lightest sheer curtains to our fully blackout options.
Start by thinking about the room

Different Curtain Materials
FOR MORE PRIVACY WHILE STILL LETTING IN DAYLIGHT
Woven Linen is denser than our sheer fabrics. It provides greater privacy while still allowing natural light to filter through.
With its distinctive woven texture, subtle sheen and beautifully tailored drape, it is one of our most versatile fabrics and works beautifully throughout the home.
Perfect if you want to:
- increase privacy without shutting out the daylight
- let in natural daylight
- choose a curtain with more weight and structure
- add a blackout lining if required
Woven Linen offers a timeless, natural look that suits both contemporary and classic interiors.
IF YOU WANT TEXTURE AND A FULLER CURTAIN
Bouclé offers the same practical benefits as Woven Linen but with a richer, more textured surface. Its tactile weave creates structured folds and brings warmth and character to a room.
Perfect if you want to:
- increase privacy
- let daylight into the room
- choose a curtain with a textured surface
- add a blackout lining if required
Choose Bouclé if you'd like your curtains to become a stronger design feature while maintaining a soft and inviting feel.
IF YOU PREFER A HEAVIER CURTAIN
Velvet is our heaviest curtain fabric and naturally blocks more light than our Woven Linen and Bouclé curtains. Its luxurious pile creates a full drape with deep folds, while the surface subtly changes depending on how the light falls.
Perfect if you want to:
- reduce incoming light without choosing full blackout
- maximise privacy
- choose a curtain with a luxurious drape
- add a blackout lining if required
Velvet works particularly well in bedrooms and living rooms where you want a warmeratmosphere.
IF YOU WANT TO BLACK OUT THE ROOM
Our woven linen, bouclé and velvet curtains can be ordered with a blackout lining sewn onto the back of the curtain. This allows you to choose the material and colour you love while still having a curtain that blocks out light when closed. It’s ideal if you want to use the same material across several rooms but need blackout curtains in the bedroom, or if you want to combine a decorative look with blackout functionality.
Blackout lining is a great choice for bedrooms, children’s rooms and guest rooms.
