We recommend letting your curtain rod extend about 30 cm on each side of the window. This means that if your window is 100–140 cm wide, a 200 cm rod will be perfect! You can find our curtain rods here.
So where should the curtain rod be mounted? We get questions everyday with customers wondering about the placement of their rods, "how should the rod be placed", "how do I fit a curtain rod", "where should I mount the curtain rod", "how high above the window should the curtain rod be" - it makes us so happy that the curtain rod is a star on the rise. And of course we will share our best tips! We recommend placing the rod centered between the top of the window and below the ceiling. This measurement can of course vary in between homes, but it's a good starting point. The higher up the curtain rod is placed, the more spaceous it makes the room feel.
All curtain rods come with brackets with a predecided distance from the wall. On each curtain rod you can read more about the exact distance on which your curtain rod will be.
A curtain rod that is mounted correctly, with a compatible screw and plug for your underlay, has no problem at all handling a blackout curtain, which are our heaviest curtains.
How wide should a curtain rod extend on the sides of a window? To find your perfect length, take the width of your window and add 40-60cm. This makes you get an extension of 20-30cm on each side of the window, where you can park your curtains.
At Gotain we offer curtain rods in several different styles and dimensions, the thinnest one in black wrought iron and the thickest one in solid wood. You can find our assortment of curtain rods here!

We often get questions about mounting curtain rods in ceilings, but if you are after a curtain rod look we recommend you mount it on the wall. Bespoke curtains that are to be installed on a curtain rod can only be wall mounted, unfortunately not in the ceiling. Ceiling mounting is best done with curtain tracks, so if you want your curtains to drape from the ceiling we recommend that you check out Gotains curtain tracks!
The key to the most efficient blackout is to think high and wide! The absolutely best result are achieved by mounting you blackout curtains on e ceiling mounted track, that extends along the whole width of the room. Of course you can combine a curtain rod with blackout curtains, but then the blackout effect can be slighly compromosed. Read our blackout-guide for more tips and tricks!
To mount your rods in double layers you need a double bracket, which you can find here. This makes it possible to create a classic hotel look for your curtains, with a more sheer curtain closer to the window for privacy protection and filtering sunlight, and a heavier, blackout curtain facing the room. Here you can find more tips and tricks on how to get that hotel feeling in the bedroom!
