How to measure: Roman Shades

Gotain's Roman shades can be mounted on the wall or ceiling and are custom-made to fit both width and length.

Ceiling-mounted installation:
If your Roman shade is to be mounted on the ceiling, measure the length from the ceiling down to the windowsill, and the width from the outer edge to the outer edge of the window frame. We recommend adding at least 0.4-0.8 in (1–2 cm) on each side to minimize the risk of gaps. For blackout shades, adding extra width can help ensure optimal light blocking.

Wall-mounted installation:
If your Roman shade is to be mounted on the wall, measure the length from 2.8 i (7 cm) above the window frame down to the windowsill (this measurement is required for the cord lock to function properly) or from 6 in (15 cm) above the window frame if you want to create the impression of higher ceilings. Measure the width from the outer edge to the outer edge of the window frame. We also recommend adding at least 0.4-0.8 in (1–2 cm) on each side, and extra width for blackout shades to improve coverage.

Niche Mounting: If you are installing your Roman shade inside a window recess, it is especially important that the measurements are taken accurately. Measure exactly where the blind will be positioned, as the width may vary at different points within the recess. As all Roman shades are handmade, the final width/length may vary by +/- ≈0.5 in (1-2 cm) from the ordered measurements. To ensure the roman shade fits properly, we therefore recommend deducting 0.75 in (2 cm) from the total width. Please note that this may result in small gaps at the sides. Measure the length from the top of the recess down to the window sill. If your window opens inward, we recommend mounting the Roman shade to the ceiling or on the wall instead.

For Blackout Roman Shade with Scalloped Edge: Please note that the blackout lining on the Roman shade with a scallop hem ends above the wave. The bottom 10 in (26 cm) of the shade are therefore not blackout.

How to choose the right width for your roman shade

When measuring for a roman shade, it's good to know that we make them up to a maximum width of 90.5 inches (230 cm). This is because the blind needs to work flawlessly every time you raise or lower it, while also giving a beautiful, even fold across the entire width.

The wider the shade, the heavier it becomes to raise and lower. If you'd prefer an easier, smoother everyday experience, we recommend choosing two smaller roman shades placed side by side instead.
